Trish is a perfect likeness of Dante's mother, Eva, and was created to seduce Dante to Mallet Island. At the end of the game, Mundus speaks on her existence, calling her a "useless being" and telling Dante that he can "make as many as Dante wants." But unlike Eva, however, Trish is a demon. Her electrical powers, and her acrobatic abilities (particularly jumping onto very high cliffs) are proof enough of her demonic blood. She was created for nothing more than to seduce Dante. After which, she was useless. Ordered to seek him out, she does so under Mundus's hand. This, of course, makes things sticky on Dante's end. When she comes to him, he's confused, and probably more then a little hurt, as her appearance digs up old wounds from his childhood. What a better way to force Dante out into the open, and get a final revenge?
Dante falls for Mundus's plan easily, even going as far as to save Trish after she tried to kill him. When she asks why he did it, he merely replies that she looks like his mother. When she tries to approach, he turns toward her, pointing Ebony and Ivory, and speaking harshly:
You may look like my mother, but you're no where close to her. You have no soul. You have the face, but you'll never have her fire!
He's hurt, betrayed, but he can't bring himself to hurt someone who looks like his mother, no matter how many times they fuck him over. Trish is left to herself to contemplate his words. Whether or not it's some maternal instinct later, or guilt, she saves Dante from Mundus. There is a heavy emphasis throughout the game of the secret power of Dante's mother, Eva. When Trish sacrifices herself for Dante, Dante leaves her with his mother's amulet, and his father's sword; telling her that both of his parents are there with her. He speaks to her dead body, telling her that his mother also sacrificed herself for him. In Kamiya's novelization of Devil May Cry, Dante's amulet holds a piece (or the entirety) of Eva's soul. The amulet protects Dante. And when asked in an interview about how Trish returned, Kamiya explains that Eva brought her back to protect Dante. So even though Trish has the same face, and betrays her son, Eva still uses her power to bring Trish back, and seems to hold no grudge against her. |
